(#54 in a series of people who changed the course of my life)
How fortunate are those of us who find ourselves in a vocation that provides us access to one or two leaders in our field. Well, my cup over-floweth because in my time here in Dallas, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside, being taught by, reading, hearing, and watching most of the very best activists our city has working within (and beyond) it.
The folks in the photo below (and some lurking behind the camera–you know who you are) are many–but far from all–of the people largely responsible for inflaming the passions in my heart…providing the encouragement to continue our mutual work…spending time with me to educate me, give me the words and knowledge I lack, and patience when I get it wrong…and making me a better activist, advocate, human being.
No amount of book-knowledge or education will ever provide the real-word education these people have. On a daily basis, they exhibit bravery, confidence, sincere belief in and commitment to their causes, kindness, camaraderie, tenacity–so many of the skills and talents I hope to emulate in my own life and work.
For those of you represented here (whether you’re in the photo or not)–thank you for the gift of yourselves, your work, and your example. I’m so grateful to have been able to learn from you.
